Nurse Staffing Firm to Get Financial Fuel

A local nurse staffing firm is about to receive a $1 million infusion to speed an ongoing expansion.
Valley Healthcare Systems is expected to close on the equity investment from DCA Capital Partners of Roseville by the end of the week, says co–owner Steven Swan.
The investment—DCA’s first—will help Valley expand to larger digs in Gold River, open a second office in Southern California and double its managerial staff to about 20.
Valley was founded in 2002 with the goal of recruiting nurses for short–term stints—usually 13 weeks—at understaffed medical facilities, mostly in California. The visiting nurses get great pay, free room and board and a chance to see the world, says Swan, who founded the firm with Tim Coxen.
The firm recently has focused its work in hurricane–affected areas. One recruit was RN Beatrice Brown, who was living in Gulfport, Mississippi, before Hurricane Katrina smashed the city.
She traveled here with her son to take a temporary job at Mercy General. Shortly after, her daughter joined them. She’d been living in Houston, and yes, she was fleeing Hurricane Rita.
